For over 25 years, Lakeland Volunteers in Medicine (LVIM) has provided services to those who are challenged with access to healthcare. LVIM is staffed by accredited medical professionals and community minded volunteers with a passion for ensuring that the uninsured have access to primary medical, dental and mental healthcare. LVIM is a non-profit (501c3) dependent on donations and grants to empower the medically underserved of Polk County to live healthier lives by providing access to free, high-quality, comprehensive health and dental care through a community of caring volunteers.
Costs are risingCHALLENGE: Rising premiums
LVIM had historically covered 85% of employee-only plan premiums to attract and retain quality employees. However, in 2025, their traditional plan premiums were scheduled to increase by over 33%, which would put an unsustainable financial burden on the organization and drive even more cost-sharing among the employees. LVIM wanted to extend their “culture of caring” by removing high deductibles and coinsurance that can be barriers to their employees’ receiving needed care.

A Better Solution and Happier EmployeesSOLUTION: Level-funded plan with Nurse Navigators
Working with Liz Antaya, LVIM moved from a national carrier level-funded plan to a self-directed level-funded plan that includes nurse navigators who help locate and schedule high quality medical services at no cost to employees. The new plan also includes an independent Pharmacy Benefit Manager that sources and manages high-cost prescriptions with no additional cost to employees.
