You Have to Get Your Prescriptions at Another PharmacyCHALLENGE: Forced to Send Business to a Competitor
Moose Pharmacy had health insurance plans with traditional carriers for many years, and often would change carriers with the promise of better benefits, better service, and lower costs. But insurance premiums would always increase at annual renewal, with the representation of “improved benefits” that rationalized the increase in the renewal premium. It was slightly frustrating each year, but the owners generally accepted the rising costs and rarely considered new options.
However – that all changed in 2020, when Moose Pharmacy received their predictable premium increase, along with a letter that stated that “plan participants will be required to have their prescriptions filled at (a large national retail pharmacy chain) or via mail through the mail-order division” of that large retail chain.
“That letter didn’t go over well with us,” remarked Joe Moose, co-owner of Moose Pharmacy. In effect, the company was being forced to fill employee prescriptions at a major competitor – due to the requirements of their insurer-built healthcare plan.
Taking Control and Delighting Our EmployeesSOLUTION: Move to an Employer-Built Plan
Frustrated by the growing “requirements” of their traditional carrier plan, Moose Pharmacy leadership began to explore alternatives that would continue to provide the same or better benefits while keeping costs steady. Cristy Gupton had developed a strong business relationship with the team, so they quickly turned to her guidance on creating a true employer-built plan that gave them more control.
The new Moose Pharmacy plan includes many innovative – and affordable – components that help the business have greater control while also keeping out-of-pocket costs to an acceptable level, which includes:
- An independent, flexible, employer-built plan with a local network
- An independent third-party adminstrator
- A transparent pharmacy benefits manager
- Key benefits such as telemedicine, mobile urgent care, imaging, and generic drugs – at no additional cost to Moose Pharmacy or to the employees
Potential future plan enhancements may include a Direct Primary Care feature.
Better care and lower costsRESULTS: Saving money with better benefits
In just a few short months, Moose Pharmacy is already seeing a significant improvement in their healthcare plan – by shifting from an insurer-built insurance plan to an EMPLOYER-BUILT healthcare plan.
OVERALL ANNUAL COST SAVINGS: $40,000+
